Lyon family

I had a very brief and last minute visit to the Ridware area during my summer holidays in UK (from Oman where I work). It was great to see the villages where my Lyon ancestors originated in 17th and 18th century (eg Walter Lyon bap 1739 in Mavesyn Ridware, he was my 5th great grandfather). If anybody visits this blog and is also interested in the Lyon family please get in touch. They later moved to Barton-under-Needwood and Rocester.

I found in Mavesyn Ridware churchyard Richard Lyon (died 1744) and son also Richard (died 1785). In Hamstal Ridware I found Mary Lyon died 1851. In Dunstal I found William Lyons & wife Annie (died 1930s so not immediately my family line, also plural spelling). In Pipe Ridware I found no Lyon graves.

Next time I will try to be better organised…

Lawrance/Lawrence family

My wife, Jennifer, is descended from the Lawrance/Lawrence family. Her great grandfather, John, was born at Nethertown in 1860, the son of John and Mary (nee Jeffries). Great great grandfather, john, was the son of John and Elizabeth who were farming at Hay End in 1851. welive in Swansea but visited Hamstall Ridware recently and saw the graves in the churchyard. We were also shown round Hay End Farm. We know that John of Hay End died in 1859. We are trying to find out what happened to John and Mary and wonder if any of your members can help us. Many thanks. Reply from Marty Smith, Ridware History Society Chairman:

The answer to Esme's query is that yes, there was a house at Purleyhill and I could probably send her more info and put her in touch with the people who own the land, who are interested in the history of the buildings at Purleyhill.
